Membrain with Carolina: The Inspiring Academic Journey of Rómulo - From Struggles to Success
Meet Rómulo
Rómulo, a lecturer at the University of Oss in Norway, has been a significant influence on my academic journey. As my first mentor during my undergraduate studies, his story is not just inspiring but also filled with relatable challenges and valuable life lessons. In this episode of Membrain with Carolina we get to chat to him.
Why His Story Matters
Rómulo played a crucial role in shaping my decision to pursue a career in academia, particularly in molecular biology. His experiences are a testament to overcoming doubts and finding one's path, making him a continuous source of guidance and friendship.
The Journey
Early Struggles
Rómulo’s initial foray into graduate studies in Biology was mentally taxing, leaving him disillusioned with the field. After being discouraged by a lecturer from pursuing further studies in human reproduction, he temporarily gave up on his academic dreams and worked with his father. However, he soon realized this wasn’t his true calling.
A New Beginning
Motivated by his passion for genetics, Rómulo decided to give academia another shot. With the support of his girlfriend (now wife), he joined a research group where he found an encouraging environment and a great supervisor. This move reignited his love for research.
PhD Success
Rómulo meticulously planned his PhD project, which allowed him to complete it ahead of schedule. Despite the typical academic pressures, he thrived by setting his own pace and relying on his supportive supervisor.
Love for Puzzles
Rómulo’s fascination with solving puzzles significantly influenced his research approach, allowing him to grow alongside his PhD project rather than feeling overwhelmed by it.
Living with Asperger Syndrome
Rómulo’s Asperger syndrome made stepping out of his comfort zone challenging. After completing his PhD, he chose to stay in a familiar environment but eventually sought more challenges and stability for his growing family.
The Big Move to Norway
Rómulo took a leap of faith and applied for a lecturer position in Norway. Despite initial doubts and the responsibilities of moving his family, the support from his wife and the welcoming environment in Norway made the transition successful. His children adapted well, even becoming fluent in Norwegian.
Research and Funding
In Portugal, securing research funding was tough. In contrast, Norway provided more opportunities for researchers at all levels. Rómulo also discovered the benefits of industry-academia partnerships, which were scarce in Portugal but are now becoming more common due to funding challenges.
Importance of Communication
Effective communication is vital for securing funding and inspiring others. Rómulo constantly adapts his teaching methods to ensure his students understand and engage with the material.
Coping with Rejection
Academia is rife with rejection and self-doubt. Rómulo advises focusing on controllable aspects of life and finding joy outside of work. Balancing work and personal life helps maintain energy and well-being.
Key Takeaways from Rómulo
- Don’t define your life solely by your career. Enjoy life and take time for yourself.
- Focus on what you can control and manage your time and energy wisely.
- Always be open to opportunities, but don’t force paths that aren’t working.
Rómulo’s journey is a powerful reminder of resilience, adaptation, and the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective on life and work. His story offers valuable lessons for anyone navigating the challenging yet rewarding path of academia.
