Finding my voice

For me, the importance of effective communication can hardly be overstated. I consider it an essential skill, and it is not just about the ability to deliver oral presentations. It extends to engaging with colleagues, superiors, and managing meetings to convey crucial messages and foster discussions that culminate in a mutual understanding of key subjects and subsequent actions.

Despite my recognition of its significance, I faced challenges in this area, when presenting to a scientific and non-scientific audience. A lack of questions from the audience often led me to question the clarity and impact of my delivery:

"Was my presentation so unclear that it left the audience hesitant to inquire further?"

"I like what I do and am always willing for constructive dialogues, yet am I faltering in some way?"

Additionally, as English is not my first language, I was often concerned about whether the messages in my mind were being effectively translated into my spoken words and nonverbal cues.

Determined to overcome these, I decided to enhance my communicative abilities and had the good fortune of encountering Inês Moura, an incredible executive vocal coach. Our sessions were transformative, rich with nuances and strategies to amplify the presence of my voice. Together, we tackled numerous aspects:

  • Learning about different communication styles
  • Adapting various communication styles for efficient information dissemination
  • Vocal training, including speech preparation, tone modulation, intonation, strategic pausing, and emphasis on key phrases.
  • Mastery of body language.
  • Techniques to captivate and retain audience attention, maximizing the retention of information.
  • Tailoring communication to diverse audience groups.

It is important to acknowledge that while acquiring knowledge in these areas is beneficial, the path to mastery is predominantly through persistent practice. Despite my growth, I know there is always room for improvement.
